How to Choose a Business Name in Nigeria (And Check If It's Available on CAC)

Choosing a business name in Nigeria is one of the most important decisions you will make as an entrepreneur, and one of the most misunderstood. Most people spend hours brainstorming the perfect name, only to discover it is already registered on CAC. Others register a name without checking whether the domain is available, whether the social handles are taken, or whether the name has any brand potential at all.
This guide walks you through everything you need to know about choosing a strong business name in Nigeria, what makes a good name, how to check CAC availability before you get attached to something that is already taken, and how to secure your domain and digital presence before someone else does.
Why your business name matters more than you think
Your business name is not just a label. In Nigeria, it is your legal identity, your brand, your domain, and the first thing a customer, bank, or investor sees when they search for you.
A registered business name with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) gives your business legal recognition under Nigerian law. It allows you to open a corporate bank account, access government loans and grants, sign official contracts, and build public trust. Without it, your business exists informally, and increasingly, banks, payment gateways, and government programmes are requiring proof of CAC registration before they will deal with you.
Beyond the legal side, your name is your brand's first impression. A generic name that sounds like fifty other businesses in your industry will always struggle to stand out. A name that is distinctive, easy to remember, and available across all the channels you need, domain, social handles, and CAC, gives you a foundation to build something that lasts.
What makes a good business name in Nigeria?
Before you start checking availability, it helps to know what you are looking for. The best business names tend to share a few qualities.
They are easy to say and easy to spell. If your customers cannot say your name over the phone or spell it correctly when searching for you online, you are already losing business. Names with unusual spelling or complex pronunciation create friction from the very first interaction.
They are distinctive. Generic words like "Global," "Solutions," "Ventures," and "Enterprise" appear in thousands of registered business names in Nigeria. While adding "Ventures" or "Enterprise" to your name increases CAC approval chances, which is a real tip worth knowing, it also makes your business harder to find and easier to forget. Aim for something that combines a distinctive word with one of these common suffixes rather than relying on the suffix alone.
They leave room to grow. A name that ties you to a single product, location, or service can become a problem as the business evolves. Lagos Cake Shop works when you are only selling cakes in Lagos. It becomes a liability when you expand to Abuja or add catering.
They are available. This is the most practical criterion, and the one most people check last instead of first. You should check CAC availability, domain availability, and social handle availability before you get emotionally invested in a name. Doing it in that order saves you a lot of wasted energy.
How to check if your business name is available on CAC
The Corporate Affairs Commission maintains a public search database of all registered business names and companies in Nigeria. Before you can reserve or register a name, CAC requires that it be unique, no other business can have the same name, and names that are too similar to existing registrations may also be rejected.
There are two ways to check:
Directly on the CAC portal. Go to icrp.cac.gov.ng and use the public search facility. Enter your proposed business name, and CAC will tell you whether it is already registered. You can also check on the pre-incorporation portal at pre.cac.gov.ng.
On Built For Small Business. Our free business name generator checks CAC availability automatically as part of the name generation process. You enter your keywords and industry, and generate name ideas. For each name you select, you get an instant CAC availability check alongside domain availability, without having to navigate between multiple websites.
If your preferred name is taken, do not simply add a word like "Nigeria" or "2024" to the end. That is a weak workaround that creates a forgettable name. Instead, go back to the drawing board with a meaningfully different name. CAC requires names to be genuinely distinct, not just technically different.
The CAC name reservation process
Once you have confirmed that your name is available, you can reserve it on CAC for a fee of ₦1000. This prevents anyone else from registering the same name while you complete your documentation. A reserved name is held for 60 days, enough time to prepare your registration documents and complete the process.
After the reservation, the full business name registration process costs approximately ₦10,000 to ₦12,000 in filing fees as of 2026, paid directly on the CAC portal. The process is fully digital; you can complete it from your phone without visiting a CAC office. Once approved, you receive an electronic Certificate of Business Name Registration and a Status Report. CAC registration also automatically generates your Tax Identification Number (TIN), which you will need for opening a business bank account and accessing government programmes.
Check your domain before you commit to the name
Here is something most Nigerian entrepreneurs discover too late: domain names and CAC registration are completely separate. A name that is available on CAC may have its .com or .com.ng domain already registered by someone else.
Securing your domain should happen at the same time as checking CAC availability, not after. If you cannot get yourbusinessname.com or at minimum yourbusinessname.com.ng, you may want to reconsider the name or find a workable variation before you register. .com.ng domains are registered through NiRA (the Nigeria Internet Registration Association) at nira.org.ng. .com domains can be registered through any international registrar. Namecheap is one of the most popular and affordable options.
When checking domains, also think about whether you can get a clean Instagram, X, and TikTok handle that matches your name. If @yourbusinessname is already taken on all three platforms by an active account, that is a branding headache worth solving before you register and build everything around a name you cannot own consistently online.
A faster way to do all of this at once
The traditional process of checking CAC, then checking domains, then checking social handles across three separate websites is time-consuming and easy to get wrong. We built the BFSB Business Name Generator specifically to collapse all of this into a single flow.
Here is what it does in one place:
You enter your keywords and your industry. The generator produces 15–20 business name ideas based on your input. For each name you click, you get an instant CAC availability check, .com and .co.uk domain availability via Namecheap, a brand colour palette matched to your industry, a font pairing, tagline suggestions, and suggested Instagram, X, and TikTok handles, all for free, with no account required.
It is the only tool in Nigeria that combines name generation, CAC availability, domain checking, and a brand kit in a single flow. If you find a name you like, you can download a basic SVG logo, copy your brand colours, and share the brand kit with a unique link.

What CAC registration does not do
This is worth being clear about because it is a common and costly misunderstanding among Nigerian business owners. CAC registration gives your business legal existence in Nigeria — it allows you to operate, open a corporate account, and enter into contracts. It does not give you trademark rights to your business name.
Trademark registration is a completely separate process handled by the Nigerian Intellectual Property Office (NIPO). If you register a business name on CAC and then build a brand around it for two years, someone else can still register that name as a trademark at NIPO and have grounds to prevent you from using it commercially.
If your business name is the core of your brand identity, which it should be, consider checking trademark availability at NIPO alongside your CAC check and filing a trademark application before or at the same time as your CAC registration. Trademark registration costs approximately ₦150,000 to ₦350,000 all-in per class, but it gives you exclusive rights to the name that CAC registration alone does not provide.
Common mistakes when choosing a business name in Nigeria
Choosing a name before checking availability. Get emotionally attached to a name after spending hours deciding on it, and then discovering it is already on CAC. This is the most common and avoidable mistake. Check first, decide later.
Using restricted words without knowing it. CAC prohibits certain words in business names, anything that implies government affiliation (Federal, National, State), specific professional associations, or financial institutions (Bank, Finance, Insurance) without the required approvals. If your name includes these words, your application will be rejected.
Submitting only one name option. CAC asks for two proposed names. Always have a genuine second choice ready, not just a minor variation of your first choice. If your first choice is rejected, your second choice goes to the front of the queue.
Ignoring the digital presence. Registering a business name without securing the domain and social handles is increasingly a problem. Domain squatters monitor CAC registrations and can buy the domain before you get to it.
Confusing CAC registration with trademark protection. As described above, they are different things. One establishes that your business exists. The other protects your brand name commercially.
Frequently Asked Questions: How to Choose a Business Name in Nigeria
How do I check if a business name is available in Nigeria?
Go to https://icrp.cac.gov.ng and use the public search to check CAC availability. You can also use the BFSB Business Name Generator at builtforsmallbusiness.com/tools/business-name-generator, which checks CAC availability automatically alongside domain availability.
How much does it cost to register a business name with CAC in 2026?
Business name registration costs approximately ₦10,000 to ₦12,000 in official CAC filing fees in 2026. Name reservation (which holds the name for 60 days) costs ₦1000. These fees are paid on the CAC portal directly.
How long does CAC business name registration take?
The fully online process typically takes between 2 and 10 working days from submission to receiving your electronic certificate.
Can I register a business name on CAC from my phone?
Yes, the entire process can be completed from a smartphone via the CAC portal and the Company Registration Portal (CRP). Physical visits to CAC offices are no longer required for most registrations.
What is the difference between a business name and a company in Nigeria?
A business name is registered for sole proprietors and partnerships; it is the simplest and most affordable registration type. A company (Limited Liability Company) is a separate legal entity with its own shareholders and directors. Companies are more complex to register and maintain, but offer limited liability protection and are often required for larger funding opportunities.
What happens if my business name is rejected by CAC?
If your first choice is rejected, usually because it is too similar to an existing name or contains a restricted word, your second proposed name is considered automatically. If both are rejected, you will need to submit new options. The ₦500 reservation fee is non-refundable.
Do I need a lawyer to register a business name in Nigeria?
No, business name registration can be done directly on the CAC portal without a lawyer. For limited liability company registration, which is more complex, legal advice is recommended.
Is CAC registration the same as trademark registration?
No. CAC registration gives your business legal existence and the right to operate under your name in Nigeria. Trademark registration with NIPO gives you exclusive commercial rights to your name and logo. They are separate processes, and both are recommended for businesses building a recognisable brand.
Can two businesses have the same name in Nigeria?
No, CAC does not allow two registered businesses to have identical or very similar names. This is enforced during the name availability check process.
